Liturgical Seasons have been observed by Christians of many
denominations, have centuries of custom and tradition behind them, and
constitute what is commonly called the Christian year. While some observances in
the Christian year such as Christmas and Easter are well known, others are less
well known. The Christian year is also closely related to the lectionary, a
three-year-cycle of Scripture readings recommended for public worship by many
denominations around the world. The Calendar of the Christian year was adopted
in 1992 by the United Methodist General Conference and is based on the oldest
Christian traditions. It is essentially the calendar that is used by the vast
majority of Christians around the world.
