THE SEASON OF EASTER
The Easter season begins with Easter Day, this year April 8th. Easter Day in the western church is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox (April 2nd). The eastern churches (Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, etc.) calculate Easter differently. So, in the west Easter can occur as early as March 22 and as late as April 25.
Easter Eve, beginning at sunset the night before Easter, is considered a part of
Easter Day, since the days of the Christian year follow the Jewish tradition of
beginning at sunset the previous day.
The Easter season is often called "The Great Fifty Days" because the time from
Easter Eve to the next church season, Pentecost, is fifty days. The color for
the season of Easter is white.
The major theme of Easter is resurrection. Christians celebrate that God raised
Jesus from death on Easter Day. Moreover, those who believe in the resurrection
power of God will be raised themselves to new life here on earth and to
continued life in heaven.
