Texas Mission of Mercy

For the first time in San Angelo, the Texas Mission of Mercy in conjunction with the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation set up shop at the First United Methodist Church to offer free dental work to those in need.
Over a weekend 50+ dentist from across the state will care for patients, along with several dozen assistants and community volunteers.

Meals for the Elderly

Volunteers from the church assist the San Angelo Meals for the Elderly Organization by delivering meals to those in need during the months of March and September. Meals are delivered during the lunch hour, and routes are available all over town. Sign up to deliver once or several times during the months. FMI contact Sandy Pedersen. Click to see First Church Deliver Meals in March!

Helping Hands Community Workdays – April

Helping Hands is an organization that focuses on partnering with volunteers to restore houses of low income, elderly homeowners at no cost. Helping Hands focuses on things volunteers can do in a day; like light plumbing, painting and caulking. More extensive repairs requiring a permit come from funding provided by the City of San Angelo or Galilee Community Development, a nonprofit organization affiliated with Helping Hands. First UMC provides a work team each April for the Community Workday event. Team members with all levels of skills are needed, including cooking lunch for the team! We are looking for people in our church who would like to volunteer their time, tools, money and/or food to work on the team. If you are interested in helping, please contact the Church Office. Methodist Assistance

First United Methodist Church helps those who are needy in our community. Funds for this mission ministry come from the monthly communion offering, interest from an endowment, donations and memorials. These individuals are referred to us by Catholic Outreach, Christians in Action, or other agencies for assistance with bills, bus tickets, or emergencies. It is open Monday thru Thursday, 1-3 p.m. There is also a Food Pantry. Food is always available even when the Methodist Assistance office is closed. The pantry is stocked with food items which are donated by the church membership, the Bayith Sunday School Class, the monthly food drives and monetary donations. Both of these mission ministries are staffed strictly by volunteers.

Kids Eat Free

Every Summer First United Methodist Church partners with the Texas Hunger Initiative to provide hot meals to students all over Tom Green County in the summer when school is out. Since 2010 over 122,000 children were provided free lunch during July and August with the help of many churches, organizations and individuals. Lincoln Middle School Partnership

DSCN2111First UMC partnered with Lincoln Middle School in 2010, as part of a city-wide effort led by House of Faith Ministries called “Community Connection Initiative” which is …a faith-based initiative, designed to partner and connect churches with public schools, in order to establish positive relationships and provide a network of resources that will empower change in our communities from the inside out”.

serving at lms

Each year First Church supports and encourages Lincoln Middle School by providing school supplies as needed, animal feed for the F.A.R.M. project, Faculty lunches and seasonal events, Mentors for students, Note-Writers and Prayer Warriors. We also collect Box Tops for Education coupons all year long in the FirstPlace Café. There’s always a lot going on at Lincoln Middle School and our FUMC Coordinator, Twyla Tasker knows about all of it.

Costa Rica Mission Teams

The church has sent seven mission teams (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2016) to Costa Rica, which is in Central America. Another trip is planned for  2017. The teams are hosted by Methodist missionaries, Ray & Lidia Zirkel, who live in San Jose. Teams do construction work and provide Vacation Bible School to local children while they are there, and range in size from 16-22 people. No experience needed – all skill levels are needed. You do not need to know Spanish. Click here to see the video from our 2012 trip.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child is a shoebox gift ministry that serves children in over 100 countries throughout the world. Shoeboxes are decorated and filled with gifts for children. In November, the boxes are collected locally and distributed by OCC all over the world.

House of Faith

House of Faith is a backyard ministry that reaches children from ages 2-18 throughout San Angelo and Tom Green County. This means the church pledges 40-50 monetary gifts or wrapped gifts – it alternates each year. Families are asked to provide a gift for one or more children from the club. Each gift averages $20. The information is available at the beginning of November, and gifts are typically returned to the church the week after Thanksgiving.

Souper Bowl of Caring

Souper Sunday is held in conjunction with the annual Superbowl, and is designed to raise awareness of local hunger and poverty needs. Each year the emphasis is on a local food agency, and a Love Offering is collected at the meal for their benefit.
